Abstract

This paper focuses on the improvement of new energy vehicles. Resource shortages and environmental pollution are problems that have been plagued by our country because the environment and resources are very important for a country. In order to solve these two problems, China has introduced new energy vehicles. The pollution emissions of new energy vehicles are almost negligible and there is no noise. However, there are still many drawbacks in new energy vehicles, such as battery recycling, scarce charging stations, and safety issues. Our team tried to improve the concept of new energy vehicles and promote the replacement of original fuel vehicles with new energy vehicles. Our team, Harvard students and visitors talked about their experiences, and searched for relevant information on the Internet. By combining our own discussion methods, our team was able to four essential components in our paper. 1. Government support (subsidy) 2. Corporate social responsibility 3. More parking spaces 4. Developing an app to make people better understand new energy vehicles or allow others to share their ideas that can also be practiced through this app.

Chapter1 - Introduction

  1.1 Main Problem and Methods

First of all, the reason why we established this topic is because we saw many electric cars in China. One day in Beijing, we saw someone’s green car plate. Surely, they are electric cars. This phenomenon let me think about energy shortage. We found that there are many benefits and just as many problems in regards to electric car. Consequently, we focus on the electric car problem, and attempted to solve it. To achieve this, we searched on the internet, asked teachers and friends, and spoke to several strangers at Harvard University.

1.2 Significances of Solving the Electric Car Problem

According to the small talks that took place in Harvard University, we interviewed 10 people, but there are only 1 people have ever been in an electric car. We think this is a serious problem, because although there is less pollution in America, electric cars can reduce emissions.

  1.3 Different Perspective

To draw a conclusion of all the information we gained, people provided many reasons. For instance, a person who do not want to drive an electric car can be because it is too expensive, unable to drive long time or not safe.

  1.4 The main problems

Finally we think these are the main problems. They are the battery recycling problem which means the battery may make pollution to the environment. The charging problem which means the lack of charging stations or the difficulty in developing a charging infrastructure. Also, not all electric cars emit zero emissions. In fact, for enterprises to increase their earning, they lack in quality and inflate efficiency. This can lead to safety concerns such as cars exploding.

Chapter 2 – Solutions

  2.1 Solution Overview

Our solutions include policy reform, Corporate Social Respon-sibility, special parking spaces, and a new APP.

  2.2 Policy Support

  The policies we have now:

China: In terms of China , the government has enacted policies since 2014. And China is the country that has most policies on electric cars. The policies pay more attention on restrictions and the basic equipment subsidies. Especially in big cities the policy of electric cars driving freely is a big advantage for people. China also has enacted some policies to encourage people to buy the cars and invested capital to develop the technology. America: California has designed a system called ZEV which is presenting zero-emission vehicle, and the program has been around since 1990. Car companies can sell ZEV to those who need and get money. This system is innovative and we -- China can learn some experience from it to force corporations to shoulder social responsibility.

  2.3 CSR

The corporations social responsibility (CSR) is also important. It seems that the electric car technology is being put into practice So the companies are investing heavily in research and development to make it better and safer. Companies not only do it for profits, but also for the quality of the electric cars and people's life.

  2.4 Special Parking Space

The shortage of parking space with charge stations is also one of the reasons that deters people from buying electric cars. From different aspects and occasions, we came up with different methods.

The car companies can include chargers free of charge to customers - just like buying a cellphone and receiving an included charger.

The government can also install some chargers beside the parking lot or build special parking space (no less than 10%) for electric cars.

On the other side, communities can also set up some garages with chargers for electric cars.

  2.5 APP

We can design an APP Using technology to drive the development of electric cars. The APP has three main functions. Above all, it provides the information of the electric cars for buyers. Besides, a charger map can also be developed for drivers. They can look for chargers in the shopping mall or public places. It will be of great convenience for drivers. What's more, car corporations can also talk with customers through this APP , from which they can find out the shortcomings of their products and improve it.

  2.6 Sustainability Analysis

Introducing a new policy is not as easy as it sounds like. It requires the government's attention and a true desire to protect the environment. To have sustainable development, we should learn new technologies from abroad. And people should support electric cars. They need to know the world is facing the resource shortage.

  2.7 Feasibility Analysis

We think we can give some advice to the government. We also can establish an organization to help the people who have electric cars. And maybe we can invent this APP.

Chapter 3 – Future Development

  3.1 Timeline

If what we planned can all be realized, we expect the following:

  3.2 Vision of the Future

We are heartfully looking forward to seeing electric cars be used everywhere. Perhaps one day, charging stations will be as universally available as gas stations are.

Chapter 4 – Conclusion

The social problem we found is the electric car. Through the innovation project, we designed four different solutions towards this problem. We hope that our solution may be implemented, benefit the environment, and further promote the development of electric cars.
